bash functions
here’s a quick tutorial on bash functions. Whenever I’m in the command line and I change directories I like to have the contents shown to me immediately. How do you do that? Here’s how. (I’m using OS 10.5) this is not what I want: nomi:~ spearson$ cd Desktop/ nomi:Desktop spearson$ Go to your home directory in the command line nomi:~ spearson$ pico .profile then when...

Procrastination
Ok so I have to start on my English paper soon. It’s 3-4 pages and not due until Thursday but I have to have a conference with the teacher tomorrow at 10am with 2 pages done and printed out so she can guide us or whatever. Kinda lame but at least I won’t be writing 4 pages on Wednesday night. I’m really good at putting shit off until the last minute. I work well under pressure....

blah blah blah
I’m sitting at work right now. I would have gone home already but The Texas Observer is sponsoring a book singing for Duchess of Palms by Nadine Eckhardt at Scholz Garten at 5:30 tonight so I’m sticking around until then. There’s also a blog post going up that I’m going to have to post on the home page. Until then though I’m just sitting here shuffling cards thinking...

Goodbye, Google →
This is an interesting blog post. It’s from the blog of Douglas Bowman who was a designer at Google. He left because there was too much bureaucracy in the decisions that needed to be made. In a sense Google is moving toward a closed in house way of developing their web applications now. Bowman knows that open collaboration is the best way to innovate in the modern computing world and went...

ellebina: One of my favorite covers of all time. Not that Johnny isn’t THE MAN, I just love this NIN version. It’s so powerful and leaves you feeling haunted and literally touches you. FYI. NIN did the original version of this song. Johnny Cash did the covering.

Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht made their official late night television debut on LNWJF tonight and turned it into a mini episode of Diggnation (if you’ve never seen Diggnation before, you must check it out). Even Russell Brand got in on the action. Beers spilled on laptops, Macs outnumbered Alex’s lone PC, and everyone had a (nerdy) great time.

Consciousness
The Hayles article does a good job of showing what it’s like to be an android in Philip Dick’s universe. They are treated like objects yet somehow they have become aware of this fact and begin to argue for their subjectivity. Does this make them human? After all they are just man made machines. But they have the ability to think and reason and care for their own kind. More interesting...

Deep Attention Paper 2
In Shakespeare’s Sonnets 16 and 17 he is a addressing a young man known as the ‘fair youth’. The fair youth is a young boy whom Shakespeare often writes of and considers to be very beautiful and perfect.
